Week 52 – Smailholm Mains Folly

week-52

So, it comes to an end…

My final image of Project 52 – 2013 and it’s Smailholm Mains Folly, a ‘new’ favourite of mine, newly discovered for 2013.

Visited the Folly on Boxing Day, in the late afternoon, with still a glow in the late afternoon sky, made a few images before I retreated homewards to the warm up the again, it was freeeezing…

So, finally, thanks to all of you that followed and commented over the last 52 weeks, I, for one, have throughly enjoyed my journey through 2013, and I hope you have too.

Look forward to 2014, and a new exciting Project 52 to follow.

All the best to you all in 2014

Week 51 – Kelso Christmas lights

week-51

Kelso town centre at Christmas

My penultimate image for my Project 52 – 2013

Taken while still a little colour in the sky, the town’s Christmas tree standing proud in the old cobbled Square, sitting in front of the town hall, which is on the right just off screen, and in the background the impressive Cross Keys Hotel.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Merry Christmas everyone…!

Week 50 – Winter’s Gibbet

Week 50 - Winter's Gibbet, near Elsdon

Winter’s gibbet, high on the moors, a few miles outside Elsdon, in Northumberland.

This was the site, where the body of William Winter’s body hung after execution for the murder of a local woman.

In 1791, he was aided by 2 Clarke sisters, as they robbed and murdered a local woman who lived in a wee peel tower, they were caught only when a young shepherd boy, saw them eating on the hills, he noticed the large knife Winter had, and counted the nails in his shoes, this matched the prints at the scene.

They were all executed and the body of Winter placed in chains until he had rotted away.  His remains were eventually taken down and scattered around, his skull being sent to a Dr in Newcastle.

The executioner on the day, was himself sentenced to death for stealing sheep, but for this ‘service’, he was reprieved and sent to New South Wales for 7 years instead.

Week 49 – A dreich day

week-49

A damp dreich day at Scott’s View.

Not the usual, bright, colourful, crisp image of Scott’s View.  It was lashing it down, I could hardly keep the rain of the lens, long enough to get an image.

I had left it too late, for week 49, work, shifts, weather and a wedding had made this week a very busy one.

I set out, HAVING, to capture my weekly image.  It was not looking good, everywhere I stopped, it was wet, wet, wet.

I drove round by Scott’s View, hoping to get something different, something that most people would not bother with.

The traditional view was uninspiring, so a glanced about, and spotted a few wee trees in the next field, perfect.

I trenched across, already wet through myself, to frame up and get this image…

Back home for a cuppa and a dry out!

Week 48 – Hume Castle

week-48

Hume Castle, sits above the wee village of Hume, near Kelso. The castle dominates the skyline, a massive imposing structure, that can seen for miles, and you know you are not far from home, when the silhouette comes into view.

The night before, there was a absolutely gorgeous sunset, the colours were so golden, I haven’t seen one as strong as that for a long time, but I was in the wrong place, work to be precise!

I had my fingers crossed for the same conditions the following night.  Before sunset, it didn’t look promising, then as if by magic, the colours started to appear.

I dashed, again, up to Hume, with this image in mind.  I was not to be disappointed, it was the same or even better, than last night.  I rattled off a good few images, this one being my favourite.

Week 47 – Autumn, still hanging on

week-47

Autumn, still hanging on, even after Mr Blowy MacWind has been trying to blow everything over for the past few weeks.

Taken on the way to Hawick, I pulled in and hoped the sun would be streaming down through these tress.

This road heads to Jedburgh, up over the Dunion, where one can see for miles, from the Lammermuir Hills towards Edinburgh down to the Cheviots at the Scots/English Border, to the local hills of the Eildons, Minto hills, Ruber’s Law and Minto Crags.

Week 46 – Pettico Wick

week-46

Now, I love this place, and I love long exposures by the sea too.

So with trusty 10 stopper packed with me, I headed towards Pettico Wick, near St Abbs.

The tide was going out, so I could get a wee bit closer, without having to be worried, about the tide, swallowing up my tripod mounted camera.

I had a few ‘friends’ appear, they were just being nosey, but none of the seals made it onto the final images, as they were only in the scene for seconds and my exposures were lasting minutes.

Week 45 – Bowmount Forest

week-45

In a clearing, in the forest…

I came upon these gentlemen, whilst walking in Bowmount forest.

Had they been shoved to the front, had they came out to see me? Or was this indeed the ‘back’ of the woods? They were not for talking anyway… my questions to them fell on deaf ears.

I did like the contrast of their light bark and leaves, against the dark, dark, darkness of the forest’s conifers.

“if you go down to the woods today…”

Week 44 – Down on the Tweed

week-44

Moored up for the day.  I found this rowing boat used for the incoming fishermen, lying on the banks of the Tweed, resting, ready for tomorrows action on this section of the river.

The glow of the low lying sun, sprayed colour over the entire scene, the threatening clouds, sailing by over auld Kelso bridge, and it was still a peaceful walk along the banks.

Week 43 – Reflections in the Teviot

week-43

Autumnal reflections in the River Teviot, my 10 stopper jumped out my bag in anticipation, ideal to slow down the river, giving the reflections a far more dreamy feel.

Walking up the side of the river from Roxburgh village, there were scatterings of fisherman, quietly casting their lines, hoping for a wee bite.

I don’t know if they were successful or not, but I was happy with my ‘catch’.
